When we start to become our own protector, it requires courage, action, vigilance and lots of rest. This will produce our crop of self love. Sometimes the hurt is way too deep, and the blocks are so strong for us to naturally love and care for ourselves. It's doesn't happen over night. Might take awhile..might take years. But it's better than just leaving it to get worse. An Epiphone, or even a miracle healing, through prayer and meditation might happen instantly. But to maintain that state of grace consciousness, it takes work. It takes consistent action. Prayer and acts of kindness towards ourselves over a period of time is required. Consciously working with spirit we can start learning what that means to us, " to be kind, and care for ourselves. Because when that big hurt, what ever it is, is finally felt in full and it is fully recognized,  respected and honored for all it has endured, we get the guts to take action.
